The Chat System is Temporarily Down
Welcome to Word2Word chat. You can enter the chat by clicking the Enter
button below; however, we do advise that you read through the information
on this page which explains how to use the chat and some basic rules in
the chat. Please note that no password is needed to enter the chat, just
a nice nickname. There are currently no help instructions for the chat in
Japanese or Korean.
This Chat Room will enable you to communicate between English, French,
German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Korean and Japanese.
I am running a Java IRC chat client that was designed by Steve Timko.
Some firewalls may prevent access to this chat client. You must be using
Netscape 6.1 or Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher to achieve accessability
to the chat.
Additional features and languages will be added to future versions of the
chat.
Click on the *Entrance* button at the bottom of the page to connect to
the chat window. Once the chat window appears, enter a nickname and click
okay to enter the chat. Harrasment, Profanity or any illegal activity will
not be tolerated on the chat. This chat is for people who want to learn
language or who want to chat across the language barriers.
After entering the chat adjust the language selection at the bottom of
the chat window to the language you are typing (This language selection is
to the left of where you will be typing). Adjust the language at the top
of the chat window to the language you wish to view (This language
selection is above where the text appears in the chat). You will see both
languages appear in the chat history box. The upper text in the chat
history box will be the language you are typing and the bottom text in
brackets will be the translated text. Chat Entrance 2 has an additional
language selector in the lower right that allows you to whisper in a
language other than what you have set for your default languages.
Automatic translation is not perfect; however, you should be able to
comprehend the context of the communication with our system. There are
three important things to remember about automatic translation which will
help you create the best quality translations.
- Good spelling and good grammar help make good translations.
- Local idioms and abbreviations make bad translations
- Rewrite your sentence if the translation is not understood
This system will not make good translations of songs or poetry. The system
was designed to handle general communications. A literate response by one
user should achieve a communication with a +80% accuracy in the
translation. This accuracy will allow other users to understand the gist
of the communication. Machine translation will never be 100% accurate so
please refrain from comments about problems with accuracy in the
translation. We do not recommend that students use this system in
attempting to escape thier foreign language school work. Students should
only use automatic translation systems with the approval of their
teachers.
